KTP: OUR JOURNEY TO CARBON NEUTRALITY - PART 5

Construction with Foresight - Securing Ground Water Despite Soil Sealing

During the construction of our site in Lisdorf, we decided to include the infiltration ditch in the construction plans right from the start. The environmentally beneficial trench surrounds the site on three sides and compensates for the soil covered by our buildings and parking lots. Valuable rainwater is thus purposefully directed from the warehouse roofs and parking lot into the ditch. As a result, rainwater is able to replenish surrounding groundwater instead of being washed away into the sewer system.

Did you know? For many decades, buildings were only constructed with roof drainage systems. These were (and are mostly still to this day) directly attached to sewer systems. In the past, this solution eventually just led to even greater problems. Sewer systems are often times not built to sustain the absorption of rainwater adequately. Due to the increasing proportion of sealed soil, flooding is on the rise. The rapid drainage of rain water causes the ground water level to drop. Fresh rainwater no longer ends up in fields and forests, where it is desperately needed.
Thus, we have decided to lead by example and are returning water to nature through our infiltration ditch at our Lisdorf site.

Not to mention, the infiltration ditch has another great side effect: ducks and frogs have found a new home here, even if only as a second home 🙂
